Comic Book Review: Dial H for Hero #1

I'm not entirely sure how many times a comic book title should be rebooted in a said amount of time, but I feel like Dial H for Hero has been revamped at least three times in the past five or so years. I understand that each time it's a different character, but do we REALLY need to start at #1 every time? There, that's off my chest.

Miguel, a teen daredevil, becomes the newest wielder of the Hero Dial—a rotary phone-like device that grants the user superpowers for one hour when they dial H-E-R-O. Will he rise as a new hero in the DC Universe or crumble under the weight of responsibility the dial thrusts upon him?

Simply put, the newest incarnation of Dial H for Hero is absolutely kooky enough to leave me shaking my head and wondering where they're going to go with a super hero christened Monster Truck. Yes, you heard me right: Monster Truck. The amount of love and passion writer Sam Humphries puts into the story makes everything work and somehow tie into the greater DC Universe. Joe Quinones's artwork makes the reading experience even better with his unique illustrating talents which are accented by visually pleasing colors.

Dial H for Hero #1 does its job well as a debut issue. It introduces a new character to the reader and then leaves us wanting more the way all good cliffhangers do. The hero of the story is what really puts the book over the top and adds just the right amount of zaniness to set it apart from your typical super hero title.

Movie Review: Dumbo (2019)

Over the last few years Disney has been bringing some of their animated classics to life with live action remakes. There have been a couple of stumbles, but for the most part they have been delivering the goods with films like Beauty and the Beast, Jungle Book and Pete’s Dragon. Now visionary director Tim Burton is stepping into the mix with his take on the classic Dumbo starring Danny DeVito, Colin Farrell, Finley Hobbins, Nico Parker, Michael Keaton, Eva Green and Alan Arkin. Can Burton bring his old school magic to this classic story and make it work or will it fail to lift off the ground?

Joker Movie a Character Study of a Mentally Ill Mind

I think by now we all assumed the Joker movie starring Joaquin Phoenix wouldn’t be a traditional comic book film. But in case there was any lingering doubt, co-star Marc Maron (above right) has provided some insight into what to expect. According to Maron, who plays a character named Ted Marco, the Todd Phillips-directed film is less a comic book film, and the Joker movie story more of a character study of a mentally ill person…who eventually turns into the Joker.

Home Entertainment Review: Aquaman

Aquaman displays DC and Warner Brothers continuing to course-correct their extended universe and get on the right path. While it does have its dark moments, thanks to the perfect pitch and timing of Director James Wan, it knows when to embrace its fun and exciting comic book roots. Much of that has to do with the "cool dude" swagger of star Jason Momoa and the way Amber Heard's Mera responds to his "manly" ways. Let's not forget the lush world-building created through some rather spectacular (but still flawed) CGI.

Once home to the most advanced civilization on Earth, the city of Atlantis is now an underwater kingdom ruled by the power-hungry King Orm in Aquaman. With a vast army at his disposal, Orm plans to conquer the remaining oceanic people -- and then the surface world. Standing in his way is Aquaman, Orm's half-human, half-Atlantean brother and true heir to the throne. With help from royal counselor Vulko, Aquaman must retrieve the legendary Trident of Atlan and embrace his destiny as protector of the deep.

One of the things that impresses me the most about Aquaman is how serious all the actors took their roles. Some of that credit should also go to James Wan, who obviously steered the cast in the right direction. They all treat the source material like they're performing Shakespeare and take their characters and situations in earnest. The movie plays out successfully like a blend of comic book superhero fantasy and sober mythological drama in the vein of Hamlet blended with Clash of the Titans.

James Wan's horror roots really shine through during the introduction of the Trench and Aquaman and Mera's journey through the kingdom they reign over. He's known as the King of Modern Horror for a reason, and it shows as lightning flashes and sea monsters that look like a mashup of Xenomorphs and the Creature from the Black Lagoon engulf their prey. We even get a little light gore during this sequence.

The Blu-ray + DVD + Digital HD Combo Pack for Aquaman contains over 60 minutes of special features. There are some making-of featurettes and ones that focus on different characters like Black Manta and the Heroines of Atlantis. We also get an exclusive sneak peek at DC's upcoming Shazam! movie.

32 Character Posters for Avengers: Endgame Hit the Net

Today, a huge batch of 32 character posters for Avengers: Endgame arrived online, and it might just be the most we’ve ever seen for a single movie. Immediately it was clear what Marvel Studios was doing with these character posters: those who died during Avengers: Infinity War appear in black and white while those who are still alive appeared in full color. Most of the poster told us what we already knew, but a couple of the posters gave us confirmation of the fates of two characters: Black Panther’s sister Shuri (Letitia Wright) and Thor’s fellow Asgardian warror Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson).
