DC has been on a roll with not only their live action TV series, but even more so with their straight to Blu-ray and DVD animated features. Their DC Super Hero Girls has taken the DC Universe in a direction geared towards the female fan that spawned not only new toys and comics, but a series of animated shorts on their YouTube channel and animated films. They stepped up their game with a series of original movies and show no sign of slowing down. Now they are heading underwater with the latest film DC Super Hero Girls: Legends of Atlantis, but does it offer more of what fans have enjoyed about the previous entries or will it sink to the bottom?
DC Super Hero Girls: Legends of Atlantis follows Wonder Woman, Batgirl, Supergirl, Bumblebee and the rest of the Super Crew who must journey through the depths of the ocean to Atlantis after a powerful Book of Legends is suddenly stolen from Super Hero High. There, the girls encounter Mera and Siren, the ocean-dwelling thieves, who prove to be a formidable match. In order to recover the stolen tome and return it to its rightful place, DC Super Hero Girls must band together and use their collective powers to successfully get back to land…and back to class! They continue to do some creative things with both the heroes and villains in how they made them part of the students and faculty, but this one kind of took it to a new level and spent most of the time away from the school all together.
The overall film offers up plenty of action along with the fun offering up yet another unique vision for all ages and giving the female characters and demographic a series all their own while making sure to balance it out with plenty of the male heroes to in a way that it works more so for everyone. Stepping away from the school environment and into the world of Atlantis was a ton of fun taking these characters under the sea and getting to do new things with them. As with the previous films they keep things light and fun while still bringing the action and keeping the essence of all the characters intact.
This might be a show geared towards girls, but I think it is a lot of fun for everyone. Head back to superhero high and grab your copy of DC Super Hero Girls: Legends of Atlantis available now on DVD from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment.
Review by Bobby Blakey - Bobby reviews way more movies on his own website than the genre-specific ones I post here. Check out Bobby's awesome website and his live show he co-hosts with his wife, Drusilla, at Hollywood Matrimony.
