Comic Book Review: Batman: Kings of Fear #1

Batman Kings of Fear #1 is the most fun I've had reading a comic in a while. I felt like I had uncovered a lost treasure of the 1980s and 1990s eras of The Dark Knight's adventures. The look and the feel of the book totally captures the whole vibe of those now classic tales, which makes sense when you see who's steering the ship visually.

Batman’s been overseeing Gotham City for years now and isn’t sure how much of a difference he’s making. Doubt, fear and insecurity are starting to take over. And as all of those negative feelings set in the Scarecrow orchestrates a riot at Arkham Asylum to give the Dark Knight one of his greatest challenges yet in Batman: Kings of Fear #1!

I just love the gothic flavor writer Scott Peterson gives Batman: Kings of Fear #1. Artist Kelley Jones enhances his storytelling with the signature handiwork he's become known for like Batman: Knightfall and the vampire Batman trilogy. I love seeing the long-eared Dark Knight in action again.

Batman: Kings of Fear #1 is rated T+ (Teen Plus) for violence, language, and frightening scenes. I'm not really understanding the rating at this juncture, seeing that most of what we find in the debut issue is no worse than anything we see in the main monthly Batman titles. We'll see if that changes in future installments of the limited series.

Former Batman editor Scott Peterson (Batgirl, Scooby-Doo) wrote Batman: Kings of Fear #1. Kelley Jones provided the art. The issue is 32 pages long and came out August 22nd, 2018.

Wesley Snipes Talks The Future of Blade

It’s been 14 years since Wesley Snipes put on his leather trench coat and wraparound sunglasses to fight vampires, and frankly, that’s much too long.

Wesley Snipes recently attempted to calm the waters by teasing two different projects that have the potential to bring Blade back from the dead.

"There are a lot of conversations going around right now and we’re very blessed to have the enthusiasm and interest in something coming from that world again. We’ve created two projects that fit perfectly into this world and, when people see them, I think they’re only going to have a problem with deciding which one they love the most.

All the main execs [at Marvel] and my team, we’ve been discussing for the past two years. Everyone’s enthusiastic about it, everybody gets it. But they got a business to run and they gotta square the things that they gotta figure out before they can get to it, I guess. In the meantime, we got a business to run and our own slate of things to do so… "

But the next time you see something in [the Blade universe], mark my words: what we did before is child’s play compared to what we can do now.

Star Trek Given Television Academy's Prestigious Governors Award

The Television Academy today announced Star Trek as the 2018 Governors Award recipient, recognizing the visionary science-fiction television franchise and its legacy of boldly propelling science, society and culture where no one has gone before. The prestigious award winner was chosen by the Television Academy board of governors; and the honor will be presented to CBS Television Studios during the Creative Arts Emmy Awards ceremony on Saturday, Sept. 8, 2018.

The Governors Award, which debuted in 1978, honors an individual or organizational achievement in the television arts and sciences that is exceptional and universal in nature and goes beyond the scope of annual Emmy Awards recognition. Mark Spatny is the chair of the Governors Award committee, and John O'Brien serves as vice chair.

Created in 1966 by visionary writer-producer Gene Roddenberry, the original Star Trek series sparked a cultural phenomenon, which has extended over 50 years on-air, with more than 700 episodes and 13 movie franchises. Star Trek’s multiple television series have garnered 30 Emmy Awards.

What began as a television show grew into an entertainment franchise that has consistently depicted humanity’s greatest hopes for a better tomorrow. Throughout Star Trek’s multiple series, viewers were exposed to a world where technology and science helped improve the human condition. Futuristic technological advancements featured in the show bear striking resemblances to the cell phones and virtual reality systems in use today.

"Star Trek is the first television program I can remember watching as a child and has always been ahead of its time. Not only have all the franchises promoted inclusiveness and acceptance of all people and inspired creative thought about space exploration and our future, but the technical innovations sparked by the franchise are incredibly significant to the evolution of television production and also to the communication and computer tools we use in our daily life,” said Governors Award committee Chair Spatny. “We are honored to present this award to a franchise that has made such a lasting contribution to both television and our society.”

From casting decisions to plot points, the series has consciously pursued diversity and equality, providing an optimistic depiction of a diverse and just future that inspires its audience. The original Star Trek provided a war-torn, culturally divided audience with a sense of hope for the future, one in which race, gender and nationality mattered significantly less than one’s capabilities and strengths. The show actively cast actors of various ethnicities in roles of respect—an actor of Russian descent portrayed Ensign Chekov during the Cold War and an African-American woman portrayed Lieutenant Uhura during the Civil Rights Movement. Further, the character of Lieutenant Uhura (portrayed by Nichelle Nichols) inspired Dr. Mae Jemison, the first African-American woman to fly in space and was described as a symbol of hope for equality by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. himself.

In addition, the franchise is responsible for significant visual and special effects innovations that have set the standard for television production, advancing the art of motion control photography, video, and digital compositing and editing as well as computer graphics.

Star Trek continues to inspire generations of dreamers and doers. Scientists from the California Institute of Technology, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, the Boeing Company and Worcester Polytechnic Institute, among several other organizations, credit Star Trek and its far-reaching, long-lasting social and cultural impact with driving their careers toward STEM fields.

“For over 50 years Star Trek has captivated and connected fans from around the world. What the series always brilliantly illustrated is that, despite our greatest differences, we as people are more alike than we realize; and coming together in hopes of a better tomorrow is not just a possibility but a necessity,” said David Stapf, president of CBS Television Studios. “The impact of Star Trek is far-reaching and has inspired not only countless individuals but great advancements in technology, science, health care, space exploration and more. We are so grateful to the brilliant minds and talented individuals, both in front of and behind the camera, who boldly tell stories that stand the test of time. Thank you to the Television Academy for honoring the historic Star Trek legacy and to everyone who has contributed to its success.”

Previous recipients of the Governors Award include last year’s honoree ITVS; American Idol; A+E Networks; William S. Paley; Hallmark Cards Inc.; Masterpiece Theater; Comic Relief; the ABC, CBS, FOX and NBC networks for America: A Tribute to Heroes; and the “It Gets Better” Project.

Comic Book Review: Pearl

Alright. So here's the problem with Pearl. How many different ways can the same story rooted in The Professional, Hanna, or Lucy be told? Seemingly normal girl finds out she has "unique" abilities (ie. she's a sharpshooter, knife expert, higher sensibilities, or some sort of super-human strength) and gets caught in a war between two different factions. Well, Brian Michael Bendis and  Michael Gaydos have dreamed up another way with their new DC series Pearl.

Pearl #1 begins the story of an exceptional tattoo artist and accidental assassin for one of the modern-day San Francisco Yakuza. She was born into one life, but another is calling to her. When Pearl accidentally meets one of her peers, her doppelgänger from another clan, she starts to dream of a better life. But Pearl has a very special ability that keeps pulling her back into the violent world she is desperate to escape.

Now, don't get me wrong. I'm not insinuating that Bendis and Gaydos don't have the writing or artistic chops to pull off this type of action thriller with Pearl. It's just going to be a little tougher to sell to folks who are worn out on the familiar concept presented here. The artwork and coloring is unique, although I think it might turn some readers off who like their comics to look a bit more conventional. Those who enjoy something different will appreciate it, however.

Pearl is for mature readers and contains profanity, violence, and mildly graphic sexual innuendos. None of it really pushes the story forward and is unnecessary. I'm rather surprised this didn't end up published through Vertigo, where it would have fit in better with DC's more adult-oriented titles.

Brian Michael Bendis wrote Pearl #1. Artwork was provided by Michael Gaydos. It is 32 pages long and was released on August 15th.

Home Entertainment Review: Freedom Fighters: The Ray

Credit: Warner Bros. Home Entertainment

The DC Comics TV Universe on The CW network has been knocking it out of the park. In addition to the TV series they have been making animated adventures for some of the side characters on the CW Seed including Vixen that was previous brought together into a full length animated film. Another character that got his own animated series was The Ray which starred Russell Tovey as The Ray/Ray Terrill reprising his voice to the role he played on both Legends of Tomorrow and The Flash as well as Supergirl star Melissa Benoist as Overgirl, star of the Vixen animated feature and Arrow Megalyn Echikunwoke as Vixen. As if that wasn’t enough both Arrowe and The Flash alumni return to voice their respective characters as well including Echo Kellum aka Curtis Holt/Mr. Terrific, Danielle Panabaker aka Dr. Caitlin Snow and Carlos Valdez aka Cisco Ramon/Vibe. Now the series is being brought together for an all-new film Freedom Fighters: The Ray.

In the film, all his life, Ray Terrill has fought injustice, dreaming of making a real difference like his older brother, a Marine who was killed in Afghanistan. One day, he stumbles upon a dying Super Hero from another Earth and is stunned to find that this Super Hero looks just like him—because it is! The dying Ray Terrill of Earth-X transfers photokinetic energy to this Earth’s Ray, making him a Super Hero – The Ray. However, Ray quickly learns being a Super Hero isn’t all hanging muggers from streetlamps and fighting giant robots. As the evil Nazi New Reichsman of Earth-X, led by Overgirl, close in, The Ray must learn to harness his powers by coming to terms with his true self, even if that means also finally coming out of the closet to his parents. The fate of Earth-X depends on it!

While this film isn’t quite as good as some of the other DC animated features it still offers up a great bridge between the live action shows while still being its own thing. The animation is well done and there is some great super hero action throughout, but it’s the variety of familiar characters from the TV shows that makes it really stand out. The story itself is decent, but would have enjoyed it more had it focused more on the Earth X completely. Obviously that wouldn’t make as much sense connecting to the shows, but those sequences are awesome focusing on the evil counterparts of our beloved heroes.

In the end this is a worthy animated film that brings the CW Seed episodes together and a great companion piece for those that love the Arrow-verse shows. Join the fight on Earth X when Freedom Fighters: The Ray hits Blu-ray, DVD and Digital HD on August 28th from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment.

Home Entertainment Review: The Flash: The Complete Fourth Season

I have never been a big fan of The Flash comics, but was instantly a fan when the series originally debuted in 2014. Since its debut it has grown into something much bigger than just the Flash himself sharing the screen with not only its own band of heroes, but through the CW’s DC TV Universe often crossing over with Arrow, Supergirl and Legends of Tomorrow. Now the latest season is coming home with The Flash: The Complete Fourth Season.

The Flash follows Central City forensic investigator Barry Allen who as a result of a scientific experiment gone awry is now the fastest man alive The Flash. With the help of the S.T.A.R Labs team, Caitlin Snow, Cisco Ramon and Dr. Harrison Wells, Barry protects the people of Central City from these powerful new threats. In Season Four, the mission of Barry Allen, aka The Flash, is once more to protect Central City from metahuman threats, but first, he’ll have to escape the Speed Force. With Barry trapped, the job of protecting Central City falls to his family – Detective Joe West; his fiancée, Iris West; and Wally West/Kid Flash – and the team at S.T.A.R. Labs – Dr. Caitlin Snow/Killer Frost, Cisco Ramon/Vibe and brilliant scientist Harrison Wells. When a powerful villain threatens to level the city if The Flash doesn’t appear, Cisco risks everything to break Barry out of the Speed Force. But this is only the first move of a life-or-death chess game with Clifford DeVoe aka The Thinker, a mastermind who’s always ten steps ahead of Barry, no matter how fast he’s running.

Once again this series runs perfectly on track to offer up some great moments for comic fans or just fans of the series in general. I loved that this season finally gave us a big bad that wasn’t just another speedster and in turn made the direction of the show feel fresh while keeping everything we love about it intact. Since last season while the show focuses on The Flash it is very much an ensemble super team that gives everyone here some fun moments and story arcs including a new addition to the team who is way more fun than I would have thought he would be. The same can be said for the villains as they offer up some fun moments that are nostalgic to comic fans, but make sure to keep the story flowing a lot more smoothly this season in my opinion. Last season’s finale kind of rebooted the series to help move it in some new directions, but kept everything the way we like it and allowed for a lot of familiar faces to return as well as some new ones. Much like last season’s finale this one brought an all-new cliffhanger that looks to bring even more fun for season five.

This collection not only features all 26 episodes of the season it also includes a gag reel, deleted scenes, and numerous featurettes racing you further behind the scenes of the series. Hit the ground running and grab your copy of The Flash: The Complete Fourth Season when it hits Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital HD on August 28th from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment.
