Blu-ray restorations like the "Teen Wolf" Collector's Edition is one of the big reasons I love Scream Factory so much. Released at the same time as his big-screen breakout "Back to the Future," Michael J. Fox showed the world how tough it is to not only simply be a teenager in the 1980s, but a teenage werewolf in the 1980s!
Like all teenagers, Scott Howard (Michael J. Fox) is going through some… changes. But unlike the rest of the students at Beacontown High School, Scott's changes include long hair that covers his entire body, claw-like fingernails, fangs, a heightened sense of smell, superhuman strength and the extraordinary ability to… play basketball? And that's just the beginning in "Teen Wolf."
Naturally, these uncanny new features turn this lovable loser into the most popular kid in school. But by embracing his newly minted popularity, has the Teen Wolf lost sight of what it truly means to be Scott Howard?
If you're looking for a perfect example of pure '80's cheese, "Teen Wolf" is loaded with all the right ingredients. High school house party? Check. Best friend who wants to be more? Check. Nerd who wants the snooty girl with a tough-guy boyfriend? Check! Trouble-making best bud who just wants to party, drink, and smoke pot? Check. Growing pains? If sprouting hair and fangs and howling at the moon counts as growing pains, then a definite check!
Let me give you a couple more great reasons if what I gave you above still isn't enough to convince you to watch "Teen Wolf." The impressive practical makeup effects and transformation scenes will remind you of a simpler time before CGI. Let's also not forget the incredible "Wolf Dance" set to a wonderful slice of '80's rock splendor. There's nothing like witnessing a gym-ful of high schoolers putting aside all their differences to choreograph dance with all their might.
Bonus features for "Teen Wolf" Collector's Editon include a new 2K 2017 high-definition film transfer. There's also a 143 minute documentary entitled "Never. Say. Die. The Story Of Teen Wolf" which contains brand-new interviews with the cast and crew. The original theatrical trailer and still gallery are found as well.
"Teen Wolf" is rated PG for sexual situations, violence, profanity, and alcohol, drugs, smoking, and drug use. Everything you would expect except nudity is found here. What do you think is going to be in an 1980's coming-of-age teen comedy?
