Is Miles Morales Confirmed as the New Animated Spider-Man?

It's already been taken down, but Backstage.com had a casting call for an upcoming Sony Animations project entitled "Cabin Fever" which ComicBookMovie.com speculates is the cover for the new animated "Spider-Man" movie. One of the characters they're looking to cast is "Terrence" and they're looking for a male between 13 to 15 who is described as "a young African-American / Puerta Rican teen from Brooklyn" who is "pressured with new responsibilities" and "must do his best to stay out of trouble." The rest of the description makes the character sound an awful lot like it could be Miles Morales. I don't know about you, but I think it would be a smart move to go a different route with the animated "Spider-Man" film, giving Peter Parker a rest and adding some spice to the Marvel Universe. You can read more about all this right here.

Short Film Review: "Do You See What I See?"

Okay, I know that Christmas is over for typical Americans. But according to the Catholic denomination, the Twelve Days of Christmas aren't over until January 6th. That means we still have a few days left to celebrate the holiday season and take in a few more Christmas horror and slasher gems. Unstable Ground, the producers of "The Collapsed," and 9 Light Entertainment bring us the holiday havoc of "Do You See What I See?"

"Do You See What I See?" is a bold attempt at creating a new entry in the holiday horror slasher subgenre. It hits all the beats of your standard slice and dice flick including some first-person shots and stumbling and bumbling victims. What sets it apart is its meandering into "They Live" territory and addressing the dangers of obsessiveness over video and virtual reality gaming. "Do You See What I See?" is an entertaining little splash of holiday cheer for horror fans.

During the Christmas season, two sisters (Caleigh Le Grand, Jorja Cadence) throw a house party. They're unaware that a deadly invader will be crashing the proceedings in "Do You See What I See?"

"Do You See What I See?" is unrated, but would probably gain a PG-13 rating if put before the MPAA. It contains violence and gore, profanity, alcohol, drugs, smoking, and frightening and intense scenes. Most of the kills reminded me of "Halloween" in that they're not too graphic or in your face.

You can watch "Do You See What I See?" below.

20th Century Fox supplied us with some new images from Ridley Scott's upcoming "Alien: Covenant." We're still not shown a Xenomorph, but there's plenty of other familiar sights to see. We get what appears to be space marines, a female protagonist, some updated-yet-recognizable sleeping chambers, an H.R. Giger-designed alien hallway, and more. You can see more pictures and get info for the movie after the jump.

Comic Book Review: The Lost Boys #3

After hating on issue 2 of Vertigo's The Lost Boys series, I must say further plot developments and a little more time to reflect give me a better attitude about where the mini-series is going after taking in #3. I now recognize that Writer Tim Seeley is attempting to step out and do something fresh by using the film as a springboard for a new tale of 1980's flavored horror and adventure.

If you treat a movie like a sacred object, you'll never feel free enough to take chances and give readers something unexpected. Part of the fun is seeing where the characters many hold so close to their hearts are heading and how the vampires of Santa Clara will be stopped... if they even can be.

It’s getting to be so a guy can’t go out on a Friday night in Santa Carla without somebody trying to sink their teeth into his neck! The Blood Belles are wreaking havoc across town. The Frog Brothers are missing, Star has run away, and Sam and Michael are one step ahead of having their blood drained. Only the mysterious vamp hunter known as the Believer can help them now in The Lost Boys #3!

The Lost Boys #3 is suggested for mature readers. It contains violence and gore, profanity, and frightening and intense sequences. There's really nothing seen here that we don't see in any of the Teen-rated books published by DC Comics.

The Lost Boys #3 is available now in print and digital editions.

New "Justice League" Movie Photo with Batman, Flash, and Wonder Woman

Entertainment Weekly posted a new photo from Zack Snyder's upcoming "Justice League." I wish I was more excited for this movie. The first trailer came off as trying to cop an "Avengers" lighthearted-yet-serious tone. After being disappointed in "Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice," I'm finding it hard to look forward to the next chapter in Snyder's DC Murderverse. You can see the whole picture after the jump.

Batman (Ben Affleck), Superman (Henry Cavill), Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), the Flash (Ezra Miller), Aquaman (Jason Momoa) and Cyborg (Ray Fisher) unite to battle the evil Steppenwolf (Ciarán Hinds).

Release date: November 17, 2017 (USA)
Director: Zack Snyder
Music composed by: Junkie XL
Cinematography: Fabian Wagner

Blu-ray Review: "Black Christmas" Collector's Edition

It's hard to believe that the same talent behind the joyously gritty and darkly violent "Black Christmas" brought us the warm cheeriness of "A Christmas Story." Talk about being polar opposite holiday entertainment. "Black Christmas" is an unsettling, raw, and, and shocking piece of horror cinema that preceded "Halloween" in the holiday-themed slasher film sub-genre explored so often these days. For those who love a little bloodletting during their Yuletide season full of family fun, Director Bob Clark's cult classic thriller is a great gift for yourself or others.

As winter break begins, a group of sorority sisters, including Jess (Olivia Hussey) and the often inebriated Barb (Margot Kidder), begin to receive anonymous, lascivious phone calls. Initially, Barb eggs the caller on, but stops when he responds threateningly. Soon, Barb's friend Claire (Lynne Griffin) goes missing from the sorority house, and a local adolescent girl is murdered, leading the girls to suspect a serial killer is on the loose. But no one realizes just how near the culprit is in "Black Christmas."

"Black Christmas" is rated R for violence and gore, profanity and vulgar talk, nudity, smoking and drinking, and frightening and intense scenes. The nudity is a couple of scenes featuring a man's butt. Some of the dialogue is a lot more obscene that what you might think you'd hear in a movie made in the early 1970s.

"Blade Runner 2049" Announcement Teaser Starring Harrison Ford

I'll be completely honest. I really don't know how good of an idea it is to even be trying to make a sequel to Ridley Scott's sci-fi masterpiece "Blade Runner." However, they're doing it with not only his, but Harrison Ford's blessing as well. We might as well just strap ourselves in for the ride and hope for the best under Director Denis Villeneuve's ("Arrival," "Sicario") leadership. After the jump, you can check out the "Blade Runner 2049" Announcement Teaser and the new synopsis for the film.

Thirty years after the events of the first film, a new blade runner, LAPD Officer K (Ryan Gosling), unearths a long-buried secret that has the potential to plunge what's left of society into chaos. K's discovery leads him on a quest to find Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), a former LAPD blade runner who has been missing for 30 years.

Director: Denis Villeneuve

New Featurette for Guillermo del Toro's "Trollhunters"

Anyone who reads my work on a regular basis knows how I feel about Guillermo del Toro. I absolutely hated "Pacific Rim" and think he's basically a talker who doesn't get anywhere near as many projects done as he attaches himself to. He's also a paradox in that he swears up and down horror movies should be rated R but then produces ones that are PG-13. In general, he's an out-of-control fanboy with way too much power in Hollywood. However, he did redeem himself with "Crimson Peak."

Del Toro is back with his latest creation, "Trollhunters." After the jump you can get more information and see a featurette for the new DreamWorks Animation Television and Netflix original series.

From the limitless imagination of acclaimed filmmaker Guillermo del Toro comes a tale of two worlds set to collide in the epic saga DreamWorks "Trollhunters." When ordinary teenager Jim Lake Jr. stumbles upon a mystical amulet on his way to school one morning, he inadvertently discovers an extraordinary secret civilization of mighty trolls beneath his small town of Arcadia. Suddenly destined to play a crucial role in an ancient battle of good and evil, Jim is determined to save the world – right after gym class. A must-see viewing event for the entire family, DreamWorks "Trollhunters" will bring viewers of all ages around the globe into the rich and creative world of this all-new Netflix original series, premiering worldwide December 23, 2016.

Voice talent includes Kelsey Grammer (“The Simpsons,” "X-Men: The Last Stand"), Ron Perlman ("Hellboy," “Adventure Time”), Steven Yeun (“The Walking Dead”) and Anton Yelchin ("Star Trek Beyond"). "Trollhunters" is created and executive produced by Guillermo del Toro ("Crimson Peak," "Hellboy"). Marc Guggenheim (TV’s “Arrow,” “DC’s Legends of Tomorrow”), Rodrigo Blaas (animator "Up," "Brave," "WALL•E"), Christina Steinberg ("Rise of the Guardians") and Chad Hammes ("Dragons: Race to the Edge") serve as executive producers. Dan Hageman and Kevin Hageman are co-executive producers.

Comic Book Review: DC Rebirth Holiday Special #1

Keeping things as diverse as possible, DC Comics celebrates this wonderful time of the year for all cultures through several different short stories Harley Quinn shares with us. Each superhero finishes off a night of crime-fighting or public service by celebrating in the traditions of his or her ethnicity in DC Rebirth Holiday Special #1. There's some splendid fun to be had between its festive covers. Several different writers and artists contributed to the book, so one gift we get is a spicy variety of quality talent in this 80-plus page anthology.

DC’s biggest and brightest heroes celebrate the holidays! Huntress experiences a Chanukah crisis. Flash hosts a family Christmas. Wonder Woman interrupts John Constantine’s hellblazing pagan party, Detective Chimp returns, and more in DC Rebirth Holiday Special #1!

DC Rebirth Holiday Special #1 is rated T for Teen. It contains the usual comic book action and violence we're used to. Harley is her usual half-dressed self, but there's no profanity that I can remember right off-hand or any other objectionable content.

DC Rebirth Holiday Special #1 is available now in print and digital editions.

Movie Review: "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story"

It's utterly amazing how well "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" fits together with "A New Hope." Everything you heard and read about in George Lucas's 1977 masterpiece is virtually laid out before your very eyes onscreen. The best part is that you don't feel like it's overkill or negatively affects or alters the events that unfold in the original movie. As a matter of fact, I was left going, "Oh, THAT'S why that happened."

In a time of conflict, a group of unlikely heroes band together on a mission to steal the plans to the Death Star, the Empire's ultimate weapon of destruction. They are ordinary people who choose to do extraordinary things, and in doing so, become part of something greater than themselves in "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story."

You would think that a movie that tells a tale you already know the outcome of would feel a bit predictable. "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" is concerned about HOW it all comes to pass. Knowing full-well what to expect to a slight degree didn't change the fact that I was on the edge of my seat in the final act.

The pacing and structure of "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" reminded me very much of "A New Hope" as well. You can tell the beat of the original 1977 film was studied and examined when this was assembled. Younger audiences might find the moments of plot and story development to be slow, but I give filmmakers credit for taking the neccessary time to help unfamiliar viewers understand what's truly unraveling. Not everyone who walks into "Rogue One" has seen all the other "Star Wars" movies. I know that's hard to believe, but it's true.

I've heard a lot of groanings over character development in "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story." When "A New Hope" hit theaters in 1977, we were immediately thrown into this world that felt established and were left to sort of figure out who's who and what was going on based upon the narrative and dialogue everyone was delivering. George Lucas didn't lay out everything in simple terms. We're given background on Luke Skywalker, but all the other characters show up and we accept them as who they appear to be. "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" is put together very much the same way, with most of the time spent on a backstory for main character Jyn Erso.

Composer Michael Giacchino does a good job taking bits and pieces of John Williams' orginal scores for "Star Wars" and blending them into his own musical creation. He doesn't just simply regurgitate what's come before, but uses familiar lines of music intertwined with new pieces to further the emotions, drama, and excitement of "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story."

Is there a lot of fan service in "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story." You bet there is! What would you expect from a movie that was put together by folks who grew up watching "A New Hope" every morning before school while eating cereal? None of it ever feels forced, however. When a familiar face is seen briefly, it always leaves a smile on your face. However, those who don't have that tie to the past films won't feel like they're left out.

Since I'm trying to keep this spoiler-free, I'll do my best to analyze the CGI and special effects for "Rogue One: A Star Wars." Let's just say that ILM has very much advanced the art to a whole new level of excellence. There are not just short cameos by digital human characters, but multiple scenes in which they converse and emotionally react to other individuals. The space battles are visually flawless and utterly amazing to look at.

When Director Gareth Edwards talked about his vision to make "Rogue One" a real war movie, I was immediately nervous that we'd get stretches of film shot shaky with a hand-held camera. I'm one of those guys who had to leave the theater when I went to see "District 9" and closed my eyes through much of "Paranormal Activity." I could NEVER see a movie like "Cloverfield" on the big-screen. Edwards manages to capture that documentary feel without being too unstable and jittery I'm very happy to say. I would describe it as looking like a professional news cameraman was assigned to capture the events of a ground attack.

One question on everyone's mind is, "How much is Darth Vader in the movie?" Let's just say his presence is definitely felt throughout the whole thing. If you've listened to Kathleen Kennedy or any of the filmmakers speak about the amount of screen time the Dark Lord of the Sith is given, you know what to expect.

Most of the acting in "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" was convincing and satisfying. There were little spots where it felt like the actors were possibly having to return to a specific moment or emotion they had left behind. This might have been a result of the reshoots that occurred. I would imagine that sometimes it's hard to put yourself back into a certain frame of mind or situation after having walked away from it for so long.

As a Christian, probably one of the most touching moments in "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" is when the blind Chirrut Imwe steps out in faith to accomplish a seemingly impossible task. Here's a man who isn't even a Jedi, but believes in the power of the Force enough to overcome insurmountable odds. He's also used as a shining example of how you can have an impact on others through your own example.

"Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" is rated PG-13 for extended sequences of sci-fi violence and action. It is definitely a war movie, but without too much gore thanks to the way laser blasts seem to cauterize wounds. Things do get dark at times, especially when one character shows up in particular.

I was left a bit emotionally overwhelmed at times during "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story." There are things I got to see onscreen that I never thought would ever be possible. I was so distracted by certain elements and characters at times that I couldn't concentrate on the dialogue being spoke or the action taking place. It's definitely the type of film that demands multiple viewings.
