Secret Origins #1 Comic Book

I know what you're thinking after reading the title of this article. "Another bunch of character backstories we've already heard a thousand times?" Truth be told, I thought the same thing when Secret Origins Issue #1 arrived on my doorstep. How many different ways can the same tales be told in a different way? Read more

Aquaman and the Others #1 Comic Book

One of the main goals of Aquaman's relaunch for the New 52 was to make him more relevant, self-aware and just plain cooler for a new generation of comic book fans. I think most readers would agree Geoff Johns and Ivan Reis did a spectacular job rejuvenating the character and giving him a new lease on life. Who would have thought even five years ago that the King of Atlantis would not only be able carry one monthly title, but two? Aquaman and the Others #1 proves that the hero has what it takes to lead his own team of super friends. Issue #1 of the new series wastes no time getting straight to the point with a murder and rooftop battle… and that's just in the first three pages. Read more

"Batman '66 Volume 1" Graphic Novel

Do you long for the more innocent days when Adam West and Burt Ward raced across your television in Technicolor glory battling the charismatic villains of Gotham City? When you think of the Joker, does a Latino actor who refused to shave his mustache come to mind before Heath Ledger or Jack Nicholson? Do you constantly find yourself wondering where the "POW's" and the "BAM's" are as you sit through the Tim Burton and Christopher Nolan Dark Knight films? If you answered yes to any of the questions above, then "Batman '66 Volume 1" is tailor-made for you! Read more

"End of the World" DVD

I don't know why, but for some reason I've been going through a disaster movie phase this past month. It started out with "Airport '77" and escalated quickly through the 1970s to the 1990s and beyond. I hit as many of the sub-genres along the way as I could by watching "The Towering Inferno," "Meteor," "Daylight," "Sharknado" and more. Needless to say, it wasn't hard for me to get into the zone when I received Anchor Bay Entertainment and SyFy Channel's "End of the World." Read more

"Cybergeddon" DVD

You can't ask for better promotion than having the words "From the Creator of 'CSI'" gracing the cover of your DVD. That tagline alone gives credibility to any project and guarantees it will be considered by audiences looking for something new to watch as they thumb through movie titles at the local Redbox or DVD rental store. The real question is, "Can 'Cybergeddon' deliver on the promise of quality it prominently shouts at you from its box art?" Read more

“Earth 2 Volume 3: Battle Cry” Graphic Novel

DC Comics takes readers into an alternate world with "Earth 2 Volume 3: Battle Cry." This is where the publisher encourages readers to go when they want to venture outside the box and visit another world less confined by traditional continuity. It's a universe where anything can happen and nothing is sacred. Read more

"Little House on the Prairie: Season One and Pilot Episode" Blu-ray

"Little House on the Prairie" has become an entertainment staple in my house. My wife began feverishly DVRing the show and trying to catch all the episodes in some semblance of order since running across it on GMC a couple of years back. Along the way, she sucked my sons into the family-oriented drama as well. She loves it so much I actually made a friend of mine drive 40 miles out of the way on a road trip so I could visit and take pictures of the Ingalls' homestead in Kansas for her. You can only imagine her excitement when it was announced they were releasing "Little House on the Prairie: Season One & the Pilot Movie" in a remastered deluxe edition Blu-ray that includes unedited versions of each episode and the pilot movie. Batman Eternal #1

DC Comics is doing their very best to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Dark Knight's first appearance with a new weekly series entitled Batman Eternal. Many will immediately scream, "What! ANOTHER Batman title?" Bystanders who don't hold a fanatical affection for Gotham's super hero will just stew in their own anger. Caped Crusader enthusiasts will jump up and down in ecstasy… and they have a reason to! Read more

"Captain America: The Winter Soldier" Movie

Of all the mainstream Marvel super heroes, Captain America is my most cherished. His first adventure was hands down my favorite of the Phase 1 films. The classic WWII setting and epic feel is what captured my fancy. It was like an Indiana Jones movie blended together with the comic book world. It makes perfect sense, as it was directed by a guy who cut his teeth working with Steven Spielberg and George Lucas. Although it doesn't have the same historic flavor as its predecessor, "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" still succeeds at being the second-best of all the Marvel movies up to now. Read more

The Shield Beats Captain America to the Punch

"Captain America: Winter Soldier" hits theaters and I have to say I'm very excited to see it. The flag-waving wonder is my favorite of the Avengers and certainly one of my top five characters from Marvel Comics. Although he's the most well-known, Cap isn't the first patriotic super hero to go up against foreign spies and bad guys for the good ole U.S. of A. That privilege belongs to MLJ Comics' The Shield. "Beware the Batman" Blu-ray

I don't know what it is about animated shows based on DC Comics characters as of late. It seems that as soon as we get attached to them, they disappear from the television line-up. "Beware the Batman" is the latest show to go the way of the Bermuda Triangle and vanish into thin air. Read more

"Green Lantern: The Animated Series" Blu-ray

Warner Archive brings "Green Lantern: The Animated Series" to Blu-ray in a two-disc set. Another of DC Comics' Cartoon Network properties to get canceled before it even ramped up, the collection includes all 26 episodes. Its death was contributed to poor toy sales from the live-action movie, although I don't really know why that should've affected a completely separate television show. Fans of the Emerald Knight can now celebrate knowing they can watch it any time they want in the comfort of their own home. Read more

"Noah" Movie

For over a century now, Hollywood has been obsessed with Biblical epics. Blockbuster filmmaker Cecil B. DeMille's fortune was partially built on not one but two different versions of "The Ten Commandments." Let's not forget box office hits like "Ben-Hur" and Mel Gibson's "The Passion of the Christ." "Noah" is the latest in the line of Tinseltown takes on God's Holy Word. Read more

"The Invoking" DVD

Southern gothic supernatural thrillers seem to be gaining some momentum lately. "Last Kind Words" and "A Haunting in Connecticut 2: Ghosts of Georgia" immediately come to mind. The middle of nowhere is a cheap and easy place to make a movie. There's no denying that there's very little creepier than the darkness of the woods and the isolation felt in a rural setting. RLJ Entertainment's "The Invoking" is another fine example of what can be done with a small budget in the backwoods of any state's countryside. Read more
