"Dead Shadows" Blu-ray

Scream Factory is branching out in a very big and positive way. Once known as the king of horror movie re-issues, they're starting to grab up some fine new material and broaden their horizons. If you count the Chiller Original Movies, then you know they've been heading this way for a while now. French sci-fi/ horror gem "Dead Shadows" can now be added to the list. Imagine "Night of the Comet" blended together with "The Thing" and you get an idea of what to expect from this creepy little flick. Read more

Suicide Squad: Amanda Waller #1

The latest co-star of the DC Universe to get her own one-shot has been figuring into more stories lately and given a facelift for the New 52. Suicide Squad: Amanda Waller #1 sets readers inside the mind of the commander of the ruthless team. It's no big surprise that a character working with the Suicide Squad would be singled out for a special issue, seeing that they're about to make their debut on the CW's "Arrow." Read more

KISS Celebrates the Anniversary of Their First Televised Live Performance

While celebrating the debut of KISS's "Self-titled" album is definitely important, we can't forget an event that gave millions of Americans their first glimpse of the band's unique style and strutting charisma they've become known for over the past forty years. The super group made their first national live appearance for ABC's "In Concert" on March 29th, 1974. The lives of millions of people were about to be forever impacted by a raw rock'n'roll beast. American Vampire: Second Cycle

I've been an advocate of Scott Snyder's American Vampire series since the first time I laid eyes on it. How could any fan of bloodsuckers not be? Instead of the usual pretty-boy tripe we're used to being served these days, the fanged ones found in the pages of Vertigo's complex, genre-defying, and generation-spanning comic series are scary and vicious. Unlike "Twilight," nobody sees one of the undead creatures within these pages and wants to be one. Read more

2014 is the Year of KISS

2014 certainly is shaping up to be the year of KISS. The 41 year old rock band has more going on in the first few months of this year than most groups half their age do. To say KISS are overachievers would be a gross understatement. Read more

"Beneath" Blu-ray

Ever since "Jaws" hit theaters in 1975, filmmakers have attempted to cash in on the killer sea monster craze. We've seen three sequels to the original Steven Spielberg classic alone. When sharks lost their charm, other sea beasts were drafted to take their place in the world of horror cinema. "Orca, the Killer Whale" and "Piranha" come to mind right away. Now we can add the over-sized razor-toothed catfish of "Beneath" to the list. Read more

"The Appearing" DVD

I'm always fascinated by a movie that starts off with the use of a Bible verse. Sometimes it's just a dramatic way to kick things off and means nothing more than that. Other times, the filmmaker is alluding to a message we'll be exploring for the next couple of hours or so. As a Christian, I like when that happens. Lionsgate's newest indie horror film "The Appearing" really surprised and impressed me using this approach. Read more

"Frozen" Blu-ray

There was a time in the early to mid-1990s when Disney started making animated movies without musical numbers. I can't tell you how relieved I was. I'm not a big fan of musicals at all. Do I like a lot of the classic films the Mouse House released early on? Of course I do. However, that's not to say I don't take a restroom break or frantically search for the remote to fast-forward through the songs in movies like "The Jungle Book," "Cinderella," and "Sleeping Beauty." "In Fear" Blu-ray

Sundance Film Festival selection "In Fear" was released on Blu-ray and DVD recently. Although it's easy to see why the film was chosen to be showcased at the event, it still doesn't quite measure up and falls short of taking home any awards. While it does its job by putting audiences in the grip of fear and tension, you're still left feeling much like the tormented couple lost while driving through the woods. I begged the question, "Where is this going?" as I couldn't shake the sensation of going around in circles and not getting anywhere. Read more

“Batman: Dark Victory” Graphic Novel

DC Comics delivers a new edition of "Batman: Dark Victory" and does what any great publisher would do to pull in more sales. They add new content to give readers who already have it another reason to grab an updated copy. It also gives folks who haven't picked it up or read it a chance to dive into what entertainment website IGN calls the 10th greatest Batman graphic novel ever released. The title is justifiable as made visible by a wonderfully complex crime tale and top-notch artwork. Read more

Netflix is flexing its muscles once again by bringing what has become known as "Star Wars: The Clone Wars - The Lost Missions" to the millions of subscribers of their streaming services. If fans of "a Galaxy Far, Far Away" weren't already plugged into their services, I'm sure they are now. Not only has the company acquired the rights for the sixth season's thirteen episodes, but all five of the previous seasons which were originally only available through Cartoon Network and on Blu-ray and DVD. Batman/Superman Annual #1 Comic Book Review

The newly relaunched Batman/Superman comic book series grabbed my interest right away. A chance to see the two greatest super heroes meeting each other and working together for the first time was too much to ignore. When the Man of Steel and Dark Knight from Earth 2 showed up, much of my excitement was killed. I really expected more from this newly resurrected book than what I felt was a typical foray into the tedious alternate universe storylines we've been getting as of late. It just felt like the easy way was being taken instead of coming up with something fresh and new. Read more

Superman: Lois Lane Comic Book

No other female co-star in the DC Comics Universe has earned their keep more than Lois Lane. The driven newspaper reporter followed her most elusive story until she led herself right to the truth and into the arms of the Man of Steel himself. Of course, this is all pre-New 52. I have to believe that sooner or later, she'll find her way back into the embrace of Clark Kent and his alter ego. The one-shot Superman: Lois Lane gives us a little background on the headstrong newswriter's dysfunctional family life. Read more

"Batman and Son" Graphic Novel

DC Comics awards those who haven't read the graphic novel "Batman and Son" another chance through the release of a new edition. "Odd Thomas" Movie

RLJ/Image Entertainment brings Dean Koontz's best-selling supernatural thriller "Odd Thomas" to life for the big-screen. Judging the movie on its own merits without having read any of the novels, the low-budget movie is an entertaining "who-dun-it" featuring ghostly and ghastly guest stars. It feels like it might be better suited to being a weekly television series. Read more

“The Horror at 37,000 Feet” DVD

Once upon a time, there was a world where (brace yourselves and try not to faint) cable, internet, and satellite TV didn't exist. Many would say it was a dark time best forgotten. During this time, movies would be created starring actors from television shows that were well-known.

These productions would then air as special events or movies of the week on whatever one of the three major networks created them. CBS DVD reminds audiences of this by-gone era with their release of "The Horror at 37,000 Feet." Read more

“Battle of the Damned” DVD

Ever since "The Expendables" graced theater screens, it seems every veteran tough-guy star from the 1980s has become hirable again. Dolph Lundgren has starred in his fair share of straight-to-DVD action flicks in the past few years. He now moves into the sci-fi / horror B-movie arena with "Battle of the Damned." A movie that has Lundgren kicking butt and blowing away the "enemy" can only get better when you add zombies AND robots to the equation. Read more

Batman: Joker's Daughter Comic Book

The idea of the Joker having offspring is a concept which could definitely carry a long story-arc in any of the several Bat-books. DC Comics explores the notion with a one-shot entitled Batman: Joker's Daughter. They don't do the obvious and have the girl be the direct progeny of the Joker and Harley Quinn. Interestingly, they go down a whole other route which has some readers happy and others furious. Read more
