R.I.P.D. DVD

"R.I.P.D." is yet another example of a film killed by early bad press. Based on the Dark Horse comic book, this supernatural action/comedy is quite a bit of fun. Is the storyline predictable and recycled from other films of this nature? Of course it is; but you don't stop riding rollercoasters just because one has the same amount of loops another one does at the other end of the amusement park. Read more

Aberration DVD

RLJ and Image Entertainment are known for giving independent filmmakers an avenue to get their movies out to the masses. They continue this trend with the supernatural thriller "Aberration." While not as bad as it could be, it comes across as a TV-movie-of-the-week designed for Lifetime to show during the Halloween season. Read more

All Hallows' Eve DVD

RLJ and Image Entertainment are quickly gaining a reputation for releasing some interesting independent films in both the horror and sci-fi genres. I'm not saying that you can just pick up anything they put out. Still, the quality of their projects keep getting stronger and stronger both in story content and recognizable talent appearing in their films.

Just as I say this, their latest horror offering "All Hallows' Eve" doesn't have any recognizable stars in it. However, this works in the movie's favor. It roots you in the film and keeps you from tethering yourself in reality through the sight of familiar faces like Christian Bale or Sarah Michelle Gellar. Read more

The Spirit 1987 DVD

Warner Archive continues its crusade to give fans of quirky classic television shows and movies of yesteryear what they want on-demand with the release of 1987's "The Spirit." Originally made as a pilot for a series based on Will Eisner's legendary comic book character, it ended up forever lost as a TV-movie. It wasn't until the arrival of Frank Miller's ill-received big-screen adaptation that this garnered attention once again. Read more

The set includes six of his most memorable films for AIP (American International Pictures) released for the first time on Blu-ray. Many of these gothic treasures were directed by B-Movie King Roger Corman and based on the poems of Edgar Allan Poe. Read more

The Conjuring DVD

"The Conjuring" is my favorite type of supernatural horror film. It has deeper meaning to it than just getting people scared. Everything about it is top shelf solid quality horror. I also applaud any movie that makes people think about the reality of God and the Devil. Read more

Eve of Destruction Blu-ray

Never failing to let fans of any sub-genre down, Scream Factory unleashes the sci-fi action flick "Eve of Destruction" on Blu-ray for the first time ever. Granted, it's a bare-bones edition strictly for those who have wondered where the forgotten 1991 cult classic disappeared to. The movie was a box office disaster when originally released, but found a second life on VHS and DVD. It's been largely ignored over the years, partly because it's rarely shown on television. Wizard of Oz 3D Blu-ray

For better or worse, 3D is all the rage right now. I thought I'd seen it all when a copy of Hitchcock's "Dial M for Murder 3D" crossed my path. Words can't begin to describe how ridiculous the idea is to me. Why does a classic movie like that need to be seen in three dimensions? Read more

Dallas Fan Days 2013

Dallas Fan Days 2013 unleashed thousands of fanboys and girls upon the Irving Convention Center on October 4th, 5th, and 6th. This year's event seemed to further spread out its pop culture reach by including guests from TV shows and movies far outside of the "Star Wars" and "Star Trek" realm it's been known for in the past. Enthusiasts of anything from "Harry Potter" to "Firefly" and "Hellboy" could find someone or something to get excited about. Read more

Night of the Comet Blu-ray

Scream Factory brings middle-aged horror fans another piece of their childhood on Blu-ray with the release of the "Night of the Comet" Collector's Edition. Here's another perfect example of a movie I grew up on and spent many summer days watching while on vacation at my father's house. A combination of "Night of the Living Dead," "The Omega Man," and "Valley Girl" makes this quirky film an essential addition to any fan's 1980's genre collection. Read more

Arrow: Season One Blu-ray

With the second season hitting TV screens, now is the perfect time to catch up with "Arrow: The Complete First Season." All 23 episodes and some nice special features are included in this collection. Following up in the footsteps of "Smallville," this introduces viewers to another DC character. However, Green Arrow has a much darker outlook on crime fighting and a shadier past than the Man of Steel. Read more

Fright Night 2: New Blood DVD

I have nothing against straight-to-DVD sequels to theatrical films. If a movie does minimally well in the theater and there's an audience for a lower-budget and less risky follow-up, I say why not? With that being said, sometimes it works and other times it doesn't. I actually enjoyed "30 Days of Night: Dark Days" and even "The Scorpion King" sequel and prequel. Unfortunately, I can't say the same about "Fright Night 2: New Blood." Read more

After Earth DVD

I love how the mainstream press all influence each other and basically end up writing the same review for a film while jumping on their own self-made bandwagons. The media was so obsessed with the fact that Will Smith would have the audacity to appear onscreen with his son Jaden in a movie helmed by a "failed" director that they couldn't just enjoy "After Earth" for what it is. It's a sci-fi movie filled with action and suspense and a deeper meaning at its center. Read more

Curse of Chucky Blu-ray

It's been almost a decade, but Chucky's back! Universal Home Entertainment gives fright fans "Curse of Chucky" just in time for Halloween. There's no doubt that decades down the road, the image of the deranged Good Guys doll will be immortalized right next to the Universal Classic Monsters like Frankenstein's creation, Dracula, the Wolf Man, the Mummy, and the Creature from the Black Lagoon. Right or wrong, the "Child's Play" movies and their sequels have made that big of an impact on pop culture. Read more

Justice League Vol. 3 Graphic Novel

DC Comics keeps reader anticipation at a fever pitch with "Justice League Volume 3: Throne of Atlantis." Although it stars all the members of the Super Friends, the book gives one of the team's highly unsung heroes the limelight he deserves. Aquaman and the battle over his undersea kingdom is the center of attention in this collection of Justice League issues 13 through 17 and Aquaman 15 and 16. Read more

Mission Marvel DVD

To say Disney owns a large chunk of pop culture would be an understatement. How many companies out there can claim they have Mickey Mouse, Darth Vader, and the Avengers all under one roof? The time we knew was coming is finally upon us. The melding of the Disney Universe with the Marvel Universe is here, as proven by "Phineas and Ferb: Mission Marvel." Read more

Zombie Hunter Blu-ray

"Zombie Hunter" is an absolutely ridiculous film. That's not meant to be a putdown in this case. If it were anything but ridiculous, it just wouldn't work. It's what makes the movie watchable and gives it such an entertaining air. After a zombie apocalypse, a loner (Martin Copping) with nothing left to lose drives cross-country taking out the walking dead whenever he crosses paths with them. After a car crash, he's brought to a remote refuge of survivors. He soon finds himself leading the misfits as they flee for their lives when the flesh-eaters discover their hideaway. Read more

Halloween 35th Ann. Blu-ray

It doesn't matter what time of year it is, any time you watch "Halloween" it becomes October 31st for an hour and a half. Anchor Bay Entertainment reminded me of this with its 35th Anniversary Edition of John Carpenter's slasher masterpiece. It's always a pleasure to re-visit Haddonfield and spend a little more time with Michael Myers, Dr. Loomis, Laurie Strode, and all her friends. Read more

Day of the Dead Blu-ray

I don't know how Scream Factory keeps acquiring the fine horror gems they are releasing, but good for them. George A. Romero's "Day of the Dead" finally gets the Blu-ray Collector's Edition upgrade it deserves. It might be my imagination, but it seems like it was the intent of both Romero and makeup artist Tom Savini to step up the gore a few notches with each one. This third entry in the franchise moves forward with a few more buckets of blood and body parts. Read more

It's Villains Month for DC Comics and they've taken over every title from Detective Comics to Aquaman and beyond! "Necessary Evil: Super-Villains of DC Comics" serves as a companion to the full-length documentary DVD of the same name. Read more
