Butcher Boys Movie

"Butcher Boys" has a tough road ahead of it. Thanks to its writer and producer, the movie will inevitably be compared to "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" as soon as the opening credits start to roll. It's unfair and a shame, because the movie once entitled "Boneboys" actually isn't a bad little independent horror piece. Read more

Among Friends DVD

Danielle Harris has literally grown up in front of a camera. Her first role was in 1987 for the soap opera "One Life to Live." She's never looked back since, starring in nearly 90 television shows and movies. These days, she's become a scream queen within the horror genre through her roles in four "Halloween" films and countless others. No longer content to have the camera pointed at her, Harris stepped behind it for her directing debut "Among Friends." Read more

Star Trek: Origins Blu-ray

The recent release of "Star Trek Into Darkness" has brought the legendary sci-fi franchise back to the forefront of pop culture. Unfortunately, not everyone who's seen J.J. Abrams' two movies is familiar with "Star Trek's" rich backstory and where many of the characters originally came from. Paramount Pictures and CBS Studios Blu-ray is taking measures to bridge the generation gap and give new fans a crash course in history with "Star Trek: The Original Series - Origins." Read more

Talon Volume 1 Graphic Novel

Not content with simply providing Batman with a new villainous group, DC Comics commissioned Scott Snyder to create an evil society calling themselves the Court of Owls, which has run Gotham City since before the 1900s. Snyder came up with a cartel of high society malefactors so rich in history and detailed that it's taken literally every Bat-Family book in the belfry to bring the story to a close. Those weren't even enough to get the whole story told. A new series entitled Talon was birthed out of the event dubbed "The Night of the Owls." Read more

Friday the 13th Collection Blu-ray

Warner Bros Home Entertainment has done what many thought was impossible. For the first time ever, they've compiled every "Friday the 13th" film into one package. Why did it seem like such an impossible feat? Simply because several different studios owned the movies as the franchise was passed from one to another over the years. I don't care how it happened. I'm just rejoicing in the fact that I have them all together… and now in high-definition no less! Read more

Bloody Homecoming DVD

Let's admit one thing going into this review. There's really nowhere new to go when it comes to the slasher genre. Anything you can think of has been done before. All we can hope for now is that the person making a new entry into the genre is skilled or dedicated enough to come up with something utilizing all the clichés we've all seen before but in a different way. I try to keep all this in mind whenever I receive the latest slice-and-dice film in the mail.

"Bloody Homecoming" from Image Entertainment is the latest slasher film I was sent for review. All I could think about when gazing on the cover was, "Here's somne trying to do 'Prom Night' again." The cover featuring a girl in a homecoming dress holding a bloody tiara did bring a smile to my face and I found myself nostalgically looking forward to watching the movie. Read more

Bates Motel Season One Blu-ray

Whether it's Jason, Freddy, or Michael Myers, you can't keep a good homicidal maniac down. Sooner or later, something new will pop up for die-hard fans and new generations to enjoy. The classic characters from the "Psycho" franchise are no different. The last entry in the "Psycho" series was released in 1998 and wasn't very well received. It's no wonder it took 15 years to revisit the Bates homestead. Granted, it wasn't a continuation of the original storyline started by Alfred Hitchcock in 1960. It was Gus Van Sant's shot-by-shot remake starring Vince Vaughn and Anne Heche in the roles played by Anthony Hopkins and Janet Leigh. It's still the last we saw of Norman Bates, who many would consider the Granddaddy of Slasher anti-heroes. Read more

Scavengers DVD

After watching several horror movies in a row, I was looking forward to jumping into a good sci-fi flick. I slipped Image Entertainment's "Scavengers" into my Blu-ray player and settled in for some entertaining space dog fights and laser gun battles. An hour and a half later, I was left still wanting to witness these elements. Read more

Psycho III Blu-ray

The state of mind you watch a film in makes all the difference in the world. This is something I've faced quite a bit recently when revisiting old movies being released on Blu-ray for the first time. While I could never bring myself to say out loud that I didn't like any of the sequels to "Psycho," the third one was always my least favorite. Thanks to Scream Factory, I was given a reason to refresh my memory and change my opinion after viewing the "Psycho III" Collector's Edition. Read more

Psycho II Blu-ray

As I watched "Psycho II" for the first time in several years, I found myself just as excited and giddy as I was the first time I saw it. The film still looks as cinematically beautiful as it ever has in high-definition. Director Richard Franklin simultaneously pays respect to Alfred Hitchcock and adds a new chapter to the original. If imitation is the best form of flattery, Hitch would be blushing if he were here today watching the "Psycho II" Collector's Edition. Read more

Prince of Darkness Blu-ray

As Scream Factory moves through the works of John Carpenter, they reach one of his most cerebral movies of the 1980s. "Prince of Darkness" doesn't immediately come to mind when people think about the legendary filmmaker. It's virtually forgotten to all except true fanatics of the horror mastermind. A new Blu-ray Collector's Edition aims to change that by attracting a new audience to it and giving long-time fans a high-resolution version of the classic. Read more

4 DC Collections To Own

It's easy sometimes to forget what a long legacy of great artists DC Comics has worked with over the years. Thankfully, they shine the spotlight on many of these individuals through the release of graphic novel collections featuring their work. They've recently published volumes concentrating on masterminds such as Alan Moore, Neal Adams, Jack Kirby, and Archie Goodwin. Read more

"Evidence" DVD

I really do want to like every movie I get to review. There's nothing more annoying than putting a movie in, sitting down on the couch, settling in with no expectations, and sighing as the credits role in disappointment. I consider myself easy to please when it comes to genre films. I don't expect any movie to venture too far outside of the lines these days. As much as I hate saying it, there really is nothing new under the sun. I just want the filmmakers to take what's been done before, shake it up a bit, and give it their own spin. Unfortunately, Image Entertainment's "Evidence" falls short of achieving the aforementioned goal. Read more

"The Cloth" DVD

I love a good religious horror or demon possession film. My background as a Christian gives me a certain appreciation for what many critics call hokey sensationalist cinema and B-movie trash. I've seen the good ones ("The Exorcist," "Devil") and I've seen the bad ones ("The Exorcist Tapes," "The Last Exorcism Part II"). Unfortunately, Uncork'd Entertainment's "The Cloth" falls well below the threshold of bad and plunges into the abyss of laughably unwatchable. Read more

“Adele Blanc-Sec” Blu-ray

I absolutely love Shout! Factory. I don't want to seem naïve. They are a business and their goal is to make money. However, they do it with another goal in mind as well. Instead of just playing it safe and releasing things everyone knows the masses are going to gobble up, they act as treasure hunters.

Shout! Factory recovers lost gems of the past and newer films other companies won't give a chance. They continue this trend with French filmmaker Luc Besson's "The Extraordinary Adventures of Adele Blanc-Sec." Originally released in 2010, this big-screen adaptation of Jacques Tardi's acclaimed graphic novels is every bit as potent as any of the ones being made in the U.S. from the likes of Rick Riordan, Stephenie Meyer, and others. "Deadly Swarm" DVD

I don't even know where to begin as I sit down to review "Deadly Swarm." Here is a movie about killer wasps with absolutely no sting. I know it sounds like I'm trying to be witty, but it's the truth.
