Movie Review: "The Awakening"

What is it about England that makes it the perfect setting for ghost stories? Is it the rainy and bleak weather? The turn-of-the-century period décor has something to do with it I'm sure. From Sherlock Holmes mysteries to "The Woman in Black" and "The Others," it seems Merry Ole England stands in the public eye as one of the most haunted countries in the world. BBC Films continues to feed this perception with the beautifully frightful "The Awakening."

Blu-ray Review: “TerrorVision / the Video Dead” Scream! Factory Double Feature

Shout! Factory continues to give classic cult films of the horror genre the attention they deserve with the release of "TerrorVision / The Video Dead" Double Feature on Blu-ray. Both of these are rarely seen 1980s movies that each sit on the opposite end of the quality spectrum. While "TerrorVision" succeeds in its mission to be campy and over-the-top, "The Video Dead" fails because it's meant to be taken seriously to an extent. One is intended to be completely funny and enjoyable while the other is to be taken as scary with a touch of black humor. It misses its goal.

Blu-ray Review: "Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome Unrated Edition"

"Battlestar Galactica" is the franchise that will not die. The original television series in the 1970s was cancelled because of the cost of production. It was then revived for a short-lived budget-crunched version named "Galactica 80," which brought the rag-tag fleet of star voyagers to the Earth and less special effects. The franchise was kept alive throughout the 1980s and 1990s by way of comic books and novels.

"Justice League Volume 2: The Villain's Journey" Graphic Novel Review

I'm not entirely sure why any fan of comics wouldn't be reading "Justice League" on a monthly basis or attempting to keep up with it through the graphic novel collections of the series. How can anyone resist a book that stars Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Green Lantern, Aquaman, and Cyborg? Every person on the Earth has to like at least one of these heroes. If you haven't jumped on the train yet, "Justice League Volume 2: The Villain's Journey" is a good place to start.

Blu-ray Review: "Mimesis: Night of the Living Dead"

Let's begin this movie review with a quick definition of the word "mimesis." The Free Dictionary by Farlex states that "Mimesis" means "the imitation or representation of aspects of the sensible world, especially human actions, in literature and art." Now you don't have to wait for genre legend Sid Haig to explain it to you three-quarters of the way through "Mimesis: Night of the Living Dead."

DVD Review: "Cherry Tree Lane"

Filmmakers love to exploit people's worst fears. Think about all the films made over the years about plane disasters, natural disasters, zombie outbreaks, airborne pathogens, serial killers, and any and everything else released in theaters or on DVD weekly. For some reason, we're all drawn to seeing what might happen in any of these situations and experience them from the outside looking in. "Cherry Tree Lane" gives us a "glass house" view of what many people would consider one of the most frightening horrors they could experience: the home invasion.

"Batman Incorporated" Graphic Novel Review

The Dark Knight is no longer content keeping his war on crime isolated to only Gotham City. He's ready to take on the super villains and evildoers of the entire world with the help of a few friends. "Batman Incorporated" collects the first eight issues of the original 2010 to 2011 run of the monthly series. It ends with the "Leviathan Strikes" one shot which leads into the "New 52" storyline we have now.

Interview: "Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome's" Luke Pasqualino and Ben Cotton

I had the opportunity to interview actors Luke Pasqualino and Ben Cotton about their roles in "Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome" in preparation for the release of the movie. Pasqualino portrays Ensign / Lieutenant William "Husker" Adama, who will one day lead a rag-tag fleet on a quest to find Earth and escape the Cylons. Cotton takes on the role of Adama's co-pilot, Lieutenant Coker Fasjovik.

"The New Deadwardians" Graphic Novel Review

From the moment I read the first issue of "The New Deadwardians," I knew it was a series worthy of my time. I am sent at least ten to twenty comic books and graphic novels to read a week. As many can understand, it's impossible to keep up with them on a regular basis. Therefore, I have to make my wish list of books I want to come back to when they're released in a graphic novel form. Vertigo Comics' collection of the eight issues of the mini-series has now granted one of the wishes on that list.

Blu-ray Review: "Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 2"

Adaptations of beloved books are hit and miss most of the time. Many people would say more miss than hit. DC Comics has again dodged what could've been a fatal bullet with "Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 2." What fans get is a faithful animated feature that captures the spirit of Frank Miller and Klaus Janson's critically acclaimed graphic novel.

Blu-ray Review: "Paranormal Activity 4: Unrated Edition"

Every time I watch a "Paranormal Activity" movie, I walk away from it wondering why I put myself through the experience. I loathe them more than anything in cinematic history. I vainly hope that the next one couldn't be any worse than the one before it. However, they continue to disappoint me with "Paranormal Activity 4."

Blu-ray Review: "All Superheroes Must Die"

When I saw the box art for "All Superheroes Must Die," the first thing that came to mind was "Watchmen" and "Kick-Ass." The two masked men on the cover reminded me of Ozymandias and Dave Lizewski because of their costumes. I was immediately intrigued when I read the synopsis and found out who directed, wrote, and starred in it.

Lead Actors Nicholas Hoult and Teresa Palmer Talk About "Warm Bodies"

Now that the "Twilight" and "Harry Potter" sagas are either finished or taking a long break before re-booting or whatever they might do, there's a bit of a void in supernatural young adult film fare. If it's up to Summit Entertainment, Isaac Marion's "Warm Bodies" will fill that void with another type of living dead creature: the zombie. With a prequel to his first book being released online a few days before the movie version of "Warm Bodies" hits theaters and a sequel on the way, Summit quite possibly could have a new franchise on its hands.

Blu-ray Review: "Branded"

"Branded" is the perfect example of a movie that doesn't deliver what is promised on its packaging. The box art and synopsis leads one to believe they're getting a smart sci-fi alien invasion conspiracy film. What we get in reality is a metaphysical art film delivering heavy-handed social commentary.

Blu-ray Review: "Death Race 3: Inferno"

With three movies under its belt, we can safely say Universal has established a franchise with the "Death Race" movies. Who knew a big-screen remake of Roger Corman's apocalyptic 1970s B-movie "Death Race 2000" would do so well in theaters and merit prequels and sequels? The latest entry in the series is the satisfying "Death Race 3: Inferno."
