Before Watchmen: Nite Owl Issue #1 Comic Book Review

DC Comics continues its Before Watchmen winning streak with the first issue of Nite Owl. I was a little disappointed that they spent some time covering ground we've already seen in the original "Watchmen" graphic novel. Writer J. Michael Straczynski ("Superman: Earth One") throws in enough new material and background information to redeem it. It's obvious by now Dave Gibbons and John Higgins were smart to participate in these quality prequel books.

Blu-ray Review: "Wrath of the Titans"

After my utter disappointment in the "Clash of the Titans" remake, I didn't know what to think of its sequel. I felt like I could be a bit more forgiving of "Wrath of the Titans" because it was a sort of fresh start unlike the senseless retooling that was its predecessor.

Comic Book Superheroes Take Up Battle Against Human Trafficking

In the past couple of years, sex and human trafficking has been brought to the attention of the public thanks to Hollywood and indie filmmakers. Movies like "Taken," "Machine Gun Preacher," "The Whistleblower," "The Girl Who Played With Fire," and "Trade" all do their best to bring the subject into the light as a serious global problem. Recently, comic books have entered into the fight to bring awareness to this horrific crime against humanity.

Blu-ray Review: "Beyond"

It's hard to pull off a good supernatural thriller these days. Every possible angle has already been exploited hundreds of times. All you can hope for as a writer or director of this type of film is that your story is compelling and endearing enough to keep the audience's attention for 90 minutes to two hours. Filmmakers have to hope that the one or two "twist" or "surprise" endings they decide to utilize out of the five dozen already used will fit convincingly with the rest of the tale.

"Red Lanterns Volume 1: Blood and Rage" Graphic Novel Review

When DC Comics premiered "Red Lanterns" with the relaunch of its universe, I thought the idea was interesting. An entire title dedicated to the rage-filled corp. seemed like it could work with the right creative team behind it. I was sold from the first issue I saw and was excited to dig into "Red Lanterns Volume 1: Blood and Rage." I'm happy to say everything established in the first issue carried over throughout the entire initial story-arc.

"Batwoman Volume 1: Hydrology" Graphic Novel Review

How could DC Comics go wrong combining Batwoman with the popular gothic concept explored recently in "The Woman in Black." Gotham's crime fighting femme fatale received her own title after carrying Detective Comics after Bruce Wayne / Batman disappeared. "Batwoman Volume 1: Hydrology" combines issues #0 through #5 of her "New 52" series. If anyone remembers far enough back, issue #0 came out a couple of years back and after a long delay the story was expanded upon after DC rebooted it's Universe. All that waiting was worth it now that you can enjoy the whole arc.

LEGO DC Universe Super Heroes Event Promotes New "Batman 2" Game

Toys"R"Us was jam-packed more than usual this past weekend. The chain helped young fans get amped up for the release of "LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes" by hosting in-store events where kids could build Batman or Superman logos. It also helped serve as a reminder to the children's parents that it's only a few more weeks until "The Dark Knight Rises," one of the most anticipated films of the summer, hits theaters.

DVD Review: "Abraham Lincoln Vs. Zombies"

Timeliness is one thing you can count on with the Asylum Entertainment. If there's a big event film hitting movie screens, they'll be one step ahead of the curve with their own version of the subject matter. This time around we learn that not only was Abraham Lincoln a vampire hunter, but he had another part-time job as a zombie killer.

Movie Review: "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter"

Ever since seeing a screening of Timur Bekmambetov's Russian masterpiece "Night Watch," I've made it a habit to watch anything the producer / director puts his stamp of approval on. Most everything he's been involved in I've liked or appreciated. His movie "Wanted" is probably my favorite action vehicle of the last decade. It doesn't seem like anything in that genre can thrill me after witnessing all the unbelievable scenes and adrenalized energy emanated by that film. Even the movie "9," which he produced with Tim Burton, was interesting even in its imperfection.

Bekmambetov has hit gold again with "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter." Successfully marrying history with horror and vampire lore is risky business. Some people get very touchy when you start playing with historical figures and happenings. Original book author Seth Grahame-Smith wrote the screenplay, leading me to believe the final outcome is the way he wanted it to be. Obviously, Bekmambetov added the martial arts flavor to the mix.

Grahame-Smith perfectly melds patriotism, elements of horror, and history together to construct a truly convincing story. He ties different historical events together with fictional elements so well you might actually believe what he's feeding us as fact if we didn't already know otherwise.

Benjamin Walker fully embraces his roles as Honest Abe. You're already convinced he's channeling the 16th President by the time he dons the familiar beard. Rufus Sewell is as creepy as he always is as the villain of the film. The entire cast puts forth their best effort to make this a believable period piece.

The visual effects and CGI in the film work for the most part. There are a few instances where the limitations stand out, but It's not enough to distract from some great action sequences and amazing eye candy. A huge train wreck and a battle on the back of a pack of horses are examples of key VFX scenes in the movie.

There's some cheese to be found within this movie. However, it's fresh and not moldy. You can't really have a movie about a patriotic President who wields an ax as a vampire hunter without a little slice of American cheese being added to the sandwich.

"Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter" is an entertaining movie that will have Americans cheering for their country while simultaneously enjoying some great decapitations and gore. I saw a screening of the film on Juneteenth and it really helped hit home the importance of what Lincoln did for the U.S. in a fun and unique way. Much like "30 Days of Night," this is a return to the world of scary vampires. These bloodsuckers don't sparkle in the sun and quote romantic poetry. If that's what you're looking for, this isn't for you.

I'm a sucker for any comic book series Batman or any of his extended family members appear in. When I received the first issue of Justice League International a few months back I wrote it off as an extension of the "real" team. Here was another book featuring B-team superheroes for the few fans out there that follow them. Once I saw the cover featuring Batman, I decided to give the series a chance on that merit alone. It also helped that the always entertaining Booster Gold was set up as the leader of the group. How could that scenario not deliver all sorts of humorous and adventurous situations?

Before Watchmen: Silk Spectre Issue #1 Comic Book Review

After enjoying "Before Watchmen: Minutemen" Issue #1 last week, I was interested in seeing if lightning could strike twice. Having a comic book in an "event" like this come out once a week for a long period of time is risky. The job of keeping the quality up and stories consistently exciting must be exhausting. I was interested in seeing if the momentum would continue over to the second title in the series, "Before Watchmen: Silk Spectre." I'm happy to say issue #1 was a satisfying read.

Blu-ray Review: "U.S. Marshals"

What do you do when you release a movie and the co-star's character makes just as much of an impact on viewers as the main actor? Obviously you find a way to exploit the situation by coming up with another project to put that actor and character into. That's exactly what producers of "The Fugitive" did with Tommy Lee Jones' law enforcer, Sam Gerard.

Blu-ray Review: "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows"

I'm a big Sherlock Holmes fan. I read the abridged adaptation of "The Hound of the Baskervilles" as a kid and was immediately addicted. I was then introduced to Basil Rathbone's movie version of the sleuth. Over the years, I've read a few of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's short stories and loved them all. Unlike many Sherlockians, I had no problem with Robert Downey Jr. playing the character. I thoroughly enjoyed his unique, physically fit, and active exploits in Guy Ritchie's first "Sherlock Holmes" film.

Sequels can go south very quick. I was happy this wasn't the case here. With the release of the movie on Blu-ray and DVD, I was given the chance to re-evaluate it.

Before Watchmen: Minutemen Issue #1 Comic Book Review

The day has finally come and gone. The first issue of DC Comics' "Before Watchmen" event has hit the shelves of comic book stores everywhere. Contrary to what many believed, the release didn't trigger the end of the comic book industry as we know it. For those overly-passionate fans that started a countdown to the end of the world as we know it, we still woke up Thursday morning with all the modern conveniences of our civilization intact. Rorschach would be appalled.

DC Comics continues its second wave of "New 52" titles with a spin-off of the Teen Titans series entitled The Ravagers. These six super powered individuals were bred to be killers but long to be heroes. This inner moral conflict could fuel all sorts of story ideas digging deep into the characters' inner struggles to overcome their instincts. It will all depend on how many people pick up the first few issues and continue reading it month after month.

Superman Family Adventures Issue #1 Comic Book Review

There's a serious lack of comic books for children these days. As a father of a five year old, I take note anytime a publisher makes a conscious effort to fill the void in the industry. Kudos to DC Comics for their new monthly series Superman Family Adventures. Unfortunately, these titles seem to fade away after a year or two. If more parents would buy comic books for their kids to help encourage their reading and creativity, maybe we could get more quality titles like this one.
